Etanapipa instructions now in english. Thank you Hasbu for translation!

The idea for the spiral is adopted from the Finnish magazine Suuri Käsityölehti, issue Parhaat neuleet 2006. Improvement ideas and links to finished hats are welcome. This pattern is for personal use only; you may not sell items made from this pattern.

Yarn: Bulky, two different colors (e.g. Garnstudio Eskimo, Asa Gjestal Topp’t Tå). Little less than 100g of main color and 30g of contrast color for trimmings
Needles: 1 set of dpns or 1 circular needle, size 6mm/US 10
Crochet hook: 6mm/US J (Note: American crochet terms used, Am. single crochet = Br. double crochet)
Gauge: approx. 12 stitches and 16-17 rows = 10 cm/4”
Size: Woman
Cast on 60 stitches and divide them evenly on the dpns (or use the circular needle). Join to knit in the round and knit 4 rows of seed stitch (knit 1, purl 1). The piece measures approx. 2,5cm/1”.
Continue with stockinette stitch and introduce the spiral: knit all other stitches, but on each row purl 3-5 stitches in a row so that the purled stitches move to the left on each row, thus forming the spiral. See the picture:

When the hat measures approx. 13cm/5.1” (take your gauge and the size of the head into account and adjust the height accordingly) and the spiral has formed at least one full round around the hat, start decreases. Decrease a total of 8 stitches (slip, slip, knit) on the first round (two decreased on each dpn). 52 stitches remains. Knit even for 2 rows. Decrease 8 stitches again, placing the ssk’s one stitch to the left of the previous ssk. The decreases form a small spiral that moves to the left, see picture:

Remember to continue the main spiral with the purled stitches and decrease every 3 rows (depending on the yarn, your gauge and the head the hat is intended for, it might be necessary to ssk every 2 or 4 rows instead of 3 rows, watch how the hat forms).
When the hat measures approx. 19cm/7.5” and you have 4 x 5 stitches left (a total of 20 stitches), decrease 1 stitch on each dpn, a total of 4 stitches on each row, until you have a total of 4 stitches remaining. Thread the yarn through the live stitches. The height of the hat is approximately 27 cm.
Using the contrast color, single crochet around the edge of the hat and along the purled spiral all the way to the top of the hat. See picture:

Weave in ends, block lightly and take your snail hat outside for lovely walks.
